Homework Expectations

In fifth grade there is some homework that you can expect to see. Your child should spend about 45-60 minutes on homework nightly. This should include a variety of activities such as:

  • 30 minutes of nightly Reading

  • Everyday Mathematics Home Links

  • Learn/Review math facts

  • Study spelling words for the tests

  • Vocabulary

  • Extra work on science units

  • A variety of research projects for history and writing

  • Completion of any missed or unfinished class work

  • Read and discuss any school communications such as letters from Mr. Renner-Singer, Mrs. Wilkinson, or the Osborn Parent/Teacher group

  • Other items

The value of any homework is to help students to work independently and to accept the responsibility involved. Parents can help by providing a place and time where their child can work undisturbed. Parents are encouraged to provide help as needed, but it’s the child who should be doing the work. Please be positive and support your child’s efforts.

Every night you should expect to see your child’s Osborn folder coming home. Inside, there could be any work that was mentioned above, notes from the school, or other informative handouts. You can also expect to see any completed work that your child wants to show off! Please take a few minutes each night to review the contents of the folder and remind (or help) your child to do any homework assignment. The folder needs to return to school everyday.  In the morning your child will bring their folder to their desk for points and homework correction. If there are any notes from you or any work to be turned in it should also be kept in the “homework” folder. At the beginning of the year I will remind your child to check their folder to see if there is anything to turn in. As the year goes on I will expect your child to remember to turn things in. Having the folder at school everyday is part of the responsibility of being a fifth grader.

If you notice tension or frustration associated with the homework assigned, please do not hesitate to contact me about the problems that your child may be having. Homework should be a learning experience, not a frustration.

Thank you for your help and cooperation at home.
